What is Bulimia?

Bulimia is an eating disorder that has episodes of binge eating combined with maladaptive ways to arrest weight gain. While bulimia shares the goal of thinness with anorexia, it has the unique characteristic of binge eating until physically uncomfortable, followed by feelings of shame, guilt, depression or self-disgust. This binge eating may be related to overwhelming hunger cues or emotional distress, and is followed by a period of ways to prevent weight gain such as self-induced vomiting, misuse of laxatives, fasting or excessive exercise.
